Elizabeth de Béthune Fine Art
Portrinari Begonia
2008
Mixed media on paper on canvas
@ 20" x 44"
Based on several small paintings of begonias that I had made because I was fascinated by their leaf and stem growth patterns, this painting grew organically, not unlike the plants. It grew beyond strict illusion, and got very caught up in paint layers, and figure-ground shifts. But it is still very much about the plants. A chance remark about a possible art historical precident inspired the title.
