These are, primarily, portraits in a square 36" x 36" format, in which the image is surrounded by a decorative frame. For the most part, the dominant figure fills the pictorial space and overlaps the frame, pushing out of the illusion. Most of these images are of seated figures, and most of them are female. Most of them are images of people close to me. However, the content was really less important than the idea of playing, literally, with figure and ground. In the most recent images, the flat elements of the border have expanded to become patterned grounds. Illuminated manuscripts may be next.
