Landscapes 2012-2018, Horizon Lines
These landscapes depict places I had travelled to and, as such, are a love poem to the enchantment of being in a new place. Images of Alaska, the Southwest and the west coast of Ireland address a longing for expansiveness; they are really very much about standing in one spot and feeling the vastness of distances beyond my outstretched arms.
Each of these images realizes the horizon line through the specifics of the location, the quality of the sky, the elements that compose the ground, and how the two interact. Though not exclusively a landscape artist, I have often found contemplation of the specifics of place to be an engrossing subject. Landscapes are all about the horizon line, both as a pictorial device that divides up from down and near from far, but also as the promise of the limitlessness that may lie ahead. From the vastness, we make choices and follow a path that shapes our lives. I often exaggerate horizon lines in many of these works because I want to emphasize the sensation of these expanses
